About Awa Banmana

Awa Banmana (they/them) is a Black, African-European, Queer mixed-media artist and activist based in Tiohtiake (Montreal). Their artwork is based on the archiving of their daily queer life in the urban contexts of giant metropolis.
Awa is also involved in grassroots community activism. They graduated from the University of Montreal (UdeM) with a BSc. in Communication and Political Sciences. Awa is currently a student at UdeM’s Grad. school of Communication, writing their memoire on Black Contemporary Art and the use of the Black identity as a creative force. Awa is also specialized in : anti oppressive dynamics in organisations, intersectional feminism and intercultural communication.
